According to Autoweek, Petty has accepted Tony Stewart's challenge to race against Danica. Senility has finally got to him. He probably won't be able to figure out the HANS device, either.

Best thing for Danica to do is just sit this one out. The backlash of being called a "chicken" will be shorter than backlash of the outcome. "Hooray, you beat an old man" or "An old man is better than you" are the only outcomes if she participates.
Doesn't matter who wins, she loses.

During his prime, Richard Petty was a much better driver than Danica will ever be.

Agree. The PR cannot be good either way for her.

I dunno if I quite believe this yet. I thought his wife didn't want him getting back in a racecar.

Only if Petty sandbags. If he puts out real times and she wins, then all is good. If he backs off and put up slow times, then she might as well pit mid race.

Probably true. But this could be a fiasco for all involved. If it happens.

A lot of things play into this scenario. My guess is it won't happen.

Don't see why she'd be called a chicken. She never cared what Petty said in the first place, I doubt she wants to get pulled into it.
If they did a little thing for charity and made it more about having fun than proving abilities, then I think it could be good. But even then, it's more about them making peace that Tony's boneheaded challenge.

I mean, it's not impossible. Men his age have tried to make the field. And his cars are quick enough to make their way in. Not to mention had he tried this year he actually would have made it thanks to the champions provisional. And it could be a huge money grab.
But the whole situation just doesnt have a good feel about it.

I wonder under what type of situation this would be undertaken. A regular NASCAR race or a grudge race. And what type of track would it be played on. Too many variables to be done in one race. It would have to be a series of races to be fair.

I know it probably won't happen, but no matter the outcome, seeing Richard Petty back in a racecar in my generation would be absolutely awesome! The number of fans a specialty event like this would bring between Danica and The King would be enough money for Nascar to greenlight it. And since Richard was halfway through his last season when I was born, I can say that I don't remember actually seeing Petty take a lap around the track.

Put 'em both in one of these.....

So, the only way to win is to not play?

I, unfortunately, do remember a few seasons of his career. But he was fading in those years. Still a big draw then and would be again. I just do not see what kind of venue this would play out in to be fair to both.

An interesting aside. He never raced or participated in any way in the Busch Series (Now Nationwide) because he was against drinking and said he would never have a name on his car that was from a company that produced alcoholic beverages.

Petty needs to focus on not having such a terrible Cup team.

If the contest was between Richard Petty Motorsports cars and Stewart-Haas Racing cars I don't think he would stand much of a chance

Have you been talking to Joshua?

"Don't see why she'd be called a chicken."
Maybe not by you and me, but the he-man woman haters would be all over it.

The safe bet there is for her to just ignore the ha man woman haters overall, which she does a good job of doing.

Take em both to Daytona and put them in time trial runs on the super speedway and the road course. Put them thru driving challenges, not just a race and have it be a huge event on one of the off weekends!

I agree. The venues should vary. Stewart said in an interview in Daytona that he would provide 2 identical cars for them to race. That at least makes it even.

It's incredibly competitive. But if you can win a pole, you can win a race. She won a pole. She knows how to drive the cars. She may or may not win a race, but she might. If she can get that first win, she might win several.
Juan Pablo Montoya, proven great driver. Won in Formula one, won at Indy. Only two wins in 8 full seasons in NASCAR.

I guess you are right. She ought to just tell him to get back in a Cup car, qualify into a few races, and see where he ends up compared to her. I would bet he would struggle to get in, and if he got in he wouldn't fare so well.

She will get a win eventually.

Dude, while I understand your sentiment, the HANS comment is a low-blow.

Just a dig at RP for his outlandish comment. He's been around NASCAR long enough to understand the HANS.
